Steven Donziger is a human rights and environmental justice advocate best known for representing over 30,000 Indigenous and farmer plaintiffs against Chevron in Ecuador’s Amazon — a case that resulted in a $9.5 billion judgment against the oil giant. In retaliation, Chevron launched a $60 billion lawsuit, orchestrated his criminal prosecution and disbarment, and had him detained for nearly 1,000 days — over four times the legal maximum for the charge. His case attracted support from 68 Nobel Prize winners and 34 members of Congress, drawing global attention to corporate misuse of legal systems. Today, Donziger remains an outspoken voice for environmental justice and the fight against SLAPP lawsuits targeting lawyers and activists.
