Pierre Van Damme, MD PhD, is Director of the Centre for the Evaluation of Vaccination at Vaccinopolis (University of Antwerp), part of the European Plotkin Institute for Vaccinology (EPIV) — a joint initiative of the Université Libre de Bruxelles and the University of Antwerp to accelerate the evaluation of vaccines for pandemic and endemic pathogens. He has more than 35 years' experience in the epidemiology of vaccine-preventable infections and in vaccine trial conduct; the Centre has run more than 550 vaccine trials since 1985. His work focuses on vaccine research, development and evaluation, infectious disease prevention, immunisation policy, and pandemic preparedness and response. He has authored more than 600 peer-reviewed publications and has received numerous international awards, including the Belgian Immunological Society's 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2025 IVI–SK Bioscience award for contributions to vaccine development for global health. He has been a member of the Belgian Royal Academy of Medicine since 2008.
