Michiel Maertens is a physical geographer and hydrologist specialising in smart, data-driven water and soil management. He earned his PhD at KU Leuven and UCLouvain, focusing on hydrological modelling and remote sensing, and has worked at VITO since 2021. He currently coordinates several projects on data-driven water and soil management, including initiatives on real-time groundwater monitoring, pollutant dynamics and climate-resilient water systems. In his work he connects field measurements and soil observations with state-of-the-art computer models to generate actionable insights for industry and government.
