
Eva Smets is Executive Director of Oxfam België/Belgique, leading the organisation since the 2020 integration of Oxfam Solidarité/Solidariteit and Oxfam Wereldwinkels/Fair Trade. With master's degrees in Contemporary History (Brussels, 2001) and Human Rights and Democratisation (Italy, 2002), she began her career as an aid worker in Central and East Africa, spending seven years in DR Congo, Uganda and Kenya with Oxfam GB and Care International, specialising in humanitarian advocacy. From 2009 to 2018 she was based in New York as Executive Director of Watchlist on Children and Armed Conflict, a network lobbying the UN Security Council on the rights of children caught up in war. Her work spans international peace and security, the protection of civilians, humanitarian aid, and the promotion of human rights, economic equality, and social protection. Fluent in Dutch, English, French and Portuguese, she lives in Antwerp.
