MUSIC & ARTS SCHOOL
Just like CUNINA, the Love Tomorrow Foundation is whole-heartedly convinced that education is the key to a better future. It is necessary for individual, social and sustainable development. But education is not only about knowledge and being able to read and write. Being able to express yourself creatively is just as important for the personal development of children and youngsters. Music, dance and arts are key in this personal development.
THE FIRST SCHOOL – SEKHA (NEPAL)
Music, dance and arts are integral to Nepalese culture and play an important role in daily life. The first Love Tomorrow Music & Arts School is a 413 m² building featuring four fully equipped classrooms, a central courtyard and a stage. Professional teachers offer the children instruction in music, dance, art and theatre.
In Nepal, 30% of the population is illiterate, despite the fact that primary education is free and mandatory for all children between 6 and 11 years old. In reality, only half of all Nepalese children go to school. In the remote mountain areas, this figure is even lower.
State schools tend to be of low quality, while private schools are too expensive for most children. This is one of the reasons why children who do try to get an education drop out of school prematurely. On April 25th, 2015 the country was struck by a major earthquake from which it is still recovering, making the situation even worse.
In Sekha, Nepal, children had no access to education. It took three hours to walk to the nearest good school. In 2008, Cunina started the construction of a boarding school. Today the Cunina Boarding School in Sekha has a kindergarten and primary school with 14 classrooms and a recreational area. Every day over 300 children from the villages in the mountains attend classes, proving its proper functioning and added value in the long term. The Love Tomorrow Music & Arts school will be integrated within the existing boarding school.
Cunina is an independent Belgian development organization that has made a conscious choice to work without any government funding for over 25 years. Cunina strives to improve access to and the quality of primary and secondary education, independent of political, religious or social beliefs. It is whole-heartedly convinced that education is the key to a better future. Those who can get an education can learn a profession. It represents a way out of the vicious circle of poverty. To Cunina, it’s not only access to education that is important, but its quality as well. Education is necessary for individual and social development and leads to sustainable development.
